The area includes a protected, driftwood-strewn estuary at the back of a wide, sandy beach - with grassy bluffs along the coast. The estuary is home to many birds and small animals. California Historical Landmark 26 commerates the passage of Spanish Explorer Captain Gaspar de Portolá through this area in October 1769.

Very beautiful beach on the intersection of 84 and highway 1. The beach is good for kids, but is crowded most of the times. Still, it is easy to get a secluded spot on the beach especially if you go north on the beach (right when you are facing the sea). Make sure you carry jackets with you as you never know when the fog will set in and it will get cold...
This is a little gem of a beach on the way to Pescadero, we always stop here and take a little walk on the beach with our little one. There is a cove of water on the beach that you can walk along and find little critters and shells. It doesn't get too crowded and you can just sit, enjoy the water and relax!
There aren't too many beaches between Santa Cruz and San Francisco along Hwy 1 that allow young kids a safe place to enjoy the water. San Gregorio State Beach has a lagoon at the mouth of the estuary that drains into the ocean along a swift but gentle little stream that flows across the sand. It's perfect for young children to float down on an inflatable tube or mini raft. The lagoon seems pretty clean and allows young children to wade and splash in without parents fearing they will get swept away by strong currents. The beach also has lots of fantastic driftwood that are the perfect building blocks for imaginative play. There are already signs that other families have come before and made forts and shelters. This nature's playground. Bring a picnic or food to BBQ at the numerous BBQ pits. You can spend all day here on a warm summer day. Be sure to bring layers as the weather can shift constantly throughout the day.
