Kids love the Carnivorous Plant Bog, with Pitcher Plants and Venus Fly Traps. The Touch and Smell Garden features aromatic and unusual varieties of foliage including chocolate and lemon mint.
The gardens were amazing. A great family activity for a sunny day. The little ones can run and explore and be noisy without bother. Unfortunately we went in January so some of the plants were not growing - we missed out on the waterlily garden :( But the cactuses more than made up for it. I felt like we spent an afternoon in Arizona just exploring the Cactus Gardens. :)
I believe this spot is iconic of Balboa park. The botanical gardens are so beautiful. I love to take a stroll through here after a lunch at the Prado. The building itself is very artistic and serves as a perfect back drop for many of the tropical plants it houses. I recomend taking advantage of this fee free exhibit and making apart of your trip around the park.
If you're strolling around Balboa Park, definitely stop by the Botanical Gardens if you need a break from stuffy museums. My 2 year old found this to be the highlight of our short visit to the park since a couple older museum curators from neighboring buildings frowned on his extraordinarily high energy level. He was able to run about freely here and gawk at all the exotic vegetation filling a nice airy old train station. The pond filled with fish outside was a big hit too.
Revitalize yourself and give the kids some fresh air by heading into Balboa Park’s magnificent display of botanical wonders. Included are more than 7,600 trees, 67 kinds of palms, and 2,200 rosebushes, plus desert cacti, lilies, ferns, orchids, bamboo, and other oxygen-rich flora. Tour the building (an old Santa Fe railroad station) for explanations of what you’ve just encountered.
