"Many great places to see"

When you get to Salisbury, head to the Visitors Information Center, located in the Gateway Building, 204 East Innes Street (800–332–2343;  www.salisburync.gov).

Here you can pick up a brochure or free audiotapes for the Salisbury Heritage Tour and the Salisbury National Cemetery Tour.

The sites that you won’t want to miss are Josephus Hall House and the 1820 Federal-style home of the chief surgeon of the Salisbury Confederate Prison.

A Civil War cannon rests on the lawn in front of the home, which has been renovated with Greek and Victorian touches. Free tours by costumed guides are given on weekends.

Another interesting home is the Old Stone House, an impressive two-story stone structure built in 1766. On the second story you’ll find two openings believed to be gunports used to fight off hostile Native Americans. In all there are 142 points of interest on the tour, which can be taken by trolley on Saturday April through October.
