Fantastic children's playground by the shore of the San Francisco Bay. Fantastic views, wonderful flat bike path perfect for kids and adults. Has a sand play area, water play area, restrooms, group BBQ area, climbing structures and baby swings.
Ryder Park is a well maintained playground/activity area for kids aged 2+. There is a very clean bathroom next to the playground. In summer, the county turns on water jets for kids to play in.
There is a large covered picnic area with grills next to the water play area, but this fills up fast so come early to stake out a space.
Things to Know:
1)Besides the covered picnic area, there is almost no shade. The trees were planted recently, and don't offer much protection from the sun. Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are a must.
2) Ryder Park is adjacent to the bay, and can be very windy and chilly, even on warm days.
3) The play area is unfenced, and quite large. Because of this, it can be difficult to supervise multiple children, especially on crowded days.
4) The water jet area is totally mobbed on hot days. Be prepared for chaos and lots of noise!!!
We have been going to this park a lot this summer. We usually meet up with our friends here and have some fun in the sun. Make sure you bring a warm change of clothes because the breeze and the water part make for some shivering little ones. If you have multiples under 3 note that they have the swings set up as one big and one toddler swing. So it does make it tricky.
This recently remodeled San Mateo park is nice, but I certainly wouldn't make a day trip out of it. It has a large jungle gym that climbers will like, bathrooms, not too much shade, a smaller play structure and a water feature that is only on until 5 pm from Memorial Day to around Labor Day.
this is one of my favorite parks because it offers a ton of things for my cautious and clean kid. there's a sand pit that keeps the sand all in one area (we avoid that area) and a cool water area that other kids love (we skip this area too). my son loves walking on the bridge and paved path to get to the park, climbing on the play equipment, spinning some of the equipment, and jumping around on the rubbery surface of the play area. it's next to the bay and close to SFO, so he loves watching the planes come in too. while we haven't had to use the bathroom yet, i love that it's available. some drawbacks: limited shade and can get windy since it's so close to the bay. parking next to the park can be tough on nice days, but there's easy parking just east of the ryder park lot that always has tons of parking.
Ryder park is where our family goes to escape the fog that hugs the coast where we live. You are almost guaranteed to find sunshine even on days when the coast is so thick in fog that you can't see the tree 100 ft in front of you. The water fountains are a huge hit with the kids especially on very hot days. However, this park always seems to be windy and can make the cold water fountains uncomfortable for young children who are already a little tentative of the water springing unpredictably from the ground.
We love to bring a picnic and spread a blanket on the well manicured grassy lawn. This playground has a fantastic group BBQ area. A perfect location for birthday parties. The bike path is flat, paved for a lot of the way, and takes you on a fantastic ride along the shoreline. Great for young children. A huge bonus for airplane lovers is being able to see airplanes coming in for their landing at SFO.
