In the winter, it's an ice-rink, in the summer, it's a roller skating rink. The 9,000 roller skating rink at the heart of the village at Northstar is free to all. So bring your own skates or rent some for just $5.
My kids had never roller skated before, but this was the perfect place for them to learn! It was quiet and no big pushy people and no confusing lights to throw them off, I also didn't lose them in the dark! Just fresh clean air, some sun and some fun. There was a live band playing when we were there and we had an amazing pizza when the kids got tired. It was a great day out!
This activity is one of the best during the summer months for our family. We make it a point to attend the first four roller skating Retro Nights on Tuesdays at the Northstar rink. With fun music from the 70's and 80's, we all look forward to two hours of roller fun.
There are several publications in the Tahoe area that contain coupons for free rentals at the rink. There is no charge for skating at the rink itself, but you must sign a waiver if you bring your own skates. Rentals were $5 per pair, otherwise.
It is good to get there early (before 6 p.m.) and secure a spot around a firepit. Bring you marshmallows and smores kits for later treats. Also, bring plenty of water as it can be a bit of a hassle to trek around the rink (or across it) for water inside the restroom building.
If you are up for spending some money, order pizzas to-go from Rubicon Pizza (YUM!) and take them out to your table near the fire-pit OR if you prefer - bring your snacks and/or dinner around the table. The best way to get items to the rink is to drop one of your party off at the main Northstar round-a-about drop off. This is level with the rink and you can load a hand wagon or some other transport item to help you get all of your things to the rink.
Parking, otherwise, is located at the lower lot.
GREAT spot for birthday or group gatherings without the high cost of a rental. Join in on the costume contest and you might win $25 gift card to Northstar! My son won the limbo contest last year and is still chipping away at his gift card!
All in all - this is a traditional summer activity for our family and makes for great exercise on a summer night.
Northstar has a new village and is great fun in the Summer too! They turn their winter ice rink into a Summer Skate Rink. It costs about $5 to rent skates and it is really fun. The rink is hard concrete, so don't fall too much. During the week there is limited food/bevi shops open, so bring a picnic lunch. On the weekends more is available. We liked lounging in the big outdoor furnishings while watching the kids skate. Bring lots of Sunscreen!
