I would agree that Rockaway is overshadowed by its neighboring Linda Mar/Pedro Point and Manor beaches, which are both, long, straight, beautiful stretches of beach for walking, sandcastle building, dog walking, playing, swimming, surfing and etc. But Rockaway is a darling little beach for strolling to after a milkshake at Rock n Robs. While it is not always clean (though I know people chip in to help on occasion), there is a fabulous walking path that can take you North up through the quarry, or South, over the hill to Linda Mar. When the flowers are out, it is a very fun, windy path to climb- with or without kids!
Nice beach when you don't want to drive too far. Tends to be dirty sometimes and try to avoid the bathrooms if you can. It's good people watching and watching the surfers is always fun.But its the perfect beach for a day trip. It doesn't get to hot, but warms up just enough in the summer time.
Rockaway Beach is my favorite beach in Pacifica, but it's not good for kids because the under tow is very strong and the waves are very big. The kids really don't feel safe getting close to the water. However, there are still some reasons to come to Rockaway with your kids. There is a biking/walking path that is nice and flat for beginning bikers. There are also boulders that our kids love to climb up and down. It's like a jungle gym. There is a little stream that kids can splash in when the water isn't contaminated (dont' worry....signs are posted when the water isn't safe). There are also a few restaurants nearby if you didn't bring lunch. All in all, with kids, I prefer to head to Linda Mar, but if you're looking for a little workout, start at Rockaway and climb up the switch back over to Linda Mar Beach. The views are spectacular and and if they get tired, you can easily push them in a stroller on this nicely paved path.
