Rock City Gardens is located atop beautiful Lookout Mountain, Georgia; approximately six miles from downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Rock City is a great place to stroll slowly enjoying your steps along the way. Don't rush through the foilage. Take the time to learn about the plants and creatures you see around you! Read the signage.
Otherwise, if you just push through it all, it's money poorly spent. This is not the cheapest attraction. One day (about four hours) for our family was nearly $80 for the six of us.
There are coupons to find for about $1 per person off. check with the Tennessee Convention and Visitors Bureau, and also check on the maps you pick up at the rest areas. Every bit of savings helps!
The kids particularly love the Mother Goose Village and the Hall of Rainbows at Rock City!
This place was beautiful. It's full of winding paths and unique stones. It has a rope bridge and the most amazing view! You can see many states from up top the lookout. When we went they had some people playing music up top and you could sit and eat. There is a cave with lawn gnomes and storybook characters in it that kids would enjoy. My daughter just liked going down the paths and being outside.
Great place to take the kids. The storybook caves, overlooks, and waterfalls are amazing. I recommend going in the spring before it gets too hot and you can enjoy the gorgeous flowers along your way. There is a nice area at the highest point with tables and chairs to sit and enjoy the view. There are also so wonderful gift shops around the park. Our families favorite was the swing rope bridge. Do not worry there is a more stationary bridge next to it.
I took a trip with my family right before the Christmas holidays to see Rock City. We went to see the lights and they were great it was cold but there was no going around this. They inspected the trail right before we went out to make sure there was no ice on it and I thought that was really nice of them to see to that . The lights were nice to see and you could walk around them when it got dark. I would recommend to anyone with or without children to see Rock City it was a lot of fun.
I have great memories of Rock City as a child, and was hoping to recreate those for my children. While Rock City is fascinating for the historical aspect, it was not as "shiny" as I remembered. The staff was pleasant, but 2 sets of bathrooms were out of order, and then some of the signs and maps looked very worn. I still think that it is a great destination if you are nearby, but I wouldn't plan a trip solely around this one place.
My family and I live pretty close to Rock City, so we go there a lot. It is a beautiful nature walk with amazing views that any age can enjoy.
If you have a child in a stroller, you will be a bit limited, but the VIP (stroller/wheelchair trail) is still worth doing. It takes you straight through the park out to the fantastic view overlooking 7 states. When my kids (now 3 and 21 months) were really little, I'd let them crawl around on the tables out at the point, and we had a great time. They love going down into the flag plaza and jumping all over the inlaid map of states (jumping from Georgia to South Carolina, for example).
Now that my kids are 2 and almost 3, we tried the whole trail with all of us walking. It was a hit! If you go when it's not too busy, it's perfect because you can go at your pace. The kids loved exploring the plants, boulders, and flowers. There is a big area on the trail with gifts and knicknacks where kids can "pan for gold" (if you buy the stuff)...if you don't buy anything, you can still play in the water, and my kids LOVE that. There is a cavern full of fairytale pictures, too, though we usually skip that part.
Oh, also, the swinging bridge is fun for adults, but I wouldn't take my little kids on it. There is a stone bridge alternative that's better. There are a couple of spots where you might want to carry them, but for the most part they can walk themselves.
If you love being outdoors and seeing amazing views, this is the trip for you!
Rock City is a huge rock garden on top of Lookout Mountain. The view from the top lets you see 7 states on a clear day. Very beautiful. I think I liked the history with the barns for advertising more than I liked the park itself.
The price was a little much but we had a good time. Plenty of gift shops and candy stores and also a Starbucks right outside the gates.
My kids are 7girl and 10 boy. Both of my kids had a wonderful time here. There was so much to look at and so many questions to ask. Both of my kids took this trip as a learning experience and both learned so much. The staff was great and helpful. We will go back next year when we pass through.
Although the address for this place is in Georgia...most people visit here while in Chattanooga, TN. It is on the top of Lookout Mountain.
It was just my wife and I and our 17 month old so we're not exactly sure how other age kids will like this place. But if they are into exploring there are plenty of caves, crevices, and bridges to enjoy.
This place is not stroller friendly so bring a backpack carrier or something or your kids will need to walk. We let our daughter walk for some of it and carried her through other parts.
There is a winding path that takes you through the whole place. It was a very relaxing and fun walk. Beautiful scenery and awesome views.
The Fairyland Caverns area was a little strange and outdated but at the same time well maintained.
We definitely could see coming back here as our kids get older. We bought a combo ticket for Rock City and Ruby Falls (another Lookout Mountain attraction) which saved us a couple dollars off of each.
This is one of those things that we saw lots of signs on the side of the road and decided we had to just check it out. It took us awhile to find the road entrance once we got off the main highway. Kids will be entertained because a lot of the stuff focuses on gnome and fairy folklore. There is a swinging bridge (scary--didn't do that with kids!) and some geological formations that are interesting. The part that I really wanted to see (and the reason why we followed the signs!) is that you can supposedly see 7 states from one point on Lookout Mountain--TN, KY, VA, NC, SC, and GA). The children will think the 1000 ton Balanced Rock is cool too.
