(Description by Eugene Parks and Rec)
Located in Eugene, Oregon, RiverPlay Discovery Village is one of the largest playgrounds in Oregon and brings the Northwest’s unique history and culture alive through creative play and state-of-the-art design features. Here, children can spend the day scaling a25-foot replica of Skinner Butte, uncovering fossils at anancient history sand dig, playing with sand and water along aminiature Willamette River, splashing underneath a giant rain circle, and recreating the life of the original inhabitants at theKalapuya and pioneer villages.
The playground design was based on principles of “inclusive design,” which means creating useful features for people with vision, hearing, and mobility limitations.Accessibility features include ramps and bridges to access the playground’s centerpiece play structure; sand and water features which are elevated to allow easy access by smaller children as well as those in a wheelchair; and auditory play devices from such features as the splashing of water.
RiverPlay is an exciting destination for Oregonians and visitors. Eugene's proximity to Interstate 5 also makes it an easy stop for families traveling through the state.
The park can get a little crowded on beautiful days. It was 60 degrees and sunny and kids were running around barefoot and in their swim suits so they could play in the water-features. Nobody loves nice weather more than folks from the NW!
We checked out the park today and it is amazing. It is not just a playground, but also teaches the kids about the history of Eugene as they play (although it isn't that obvious).
There are water features to play in, along with lots of sand. There are fun 'buildings' for the kids to go in and out of. There is a HUGE playstructure with lots of slides and ladders and things to crawl through and up. For older kids who are a little more aware of their surroundings and in a higher skill set than our 19 month old, this structure would be the cat's meow! We felt really nervous following our little guy around with all of the open gaps to fall through (not only on the sides, but on the floor with ladders going down). There is a small structure with 2 slides for the younger set, but that is all it has, which held his interested for about as long as it took for him to swoosh down the slide after climbing the stairs.
There are 2 sets of swings, but there were lots of people there and a line waiting to swing.
The scenery around the area is beautiful too. It is set right along the Willamette River and the rest of Skinner Butte park surrounds it. There are picnic tables and large trees to get some shade. There are bathrooms right there too, so you don't have to trek to find them.
We will definitely go back, but I think we will wait until we visit again when he is a little older. The bigger kids were having an absolute blast, and I know he will too!
