(Update to my previous review.) Decided to give the rinconada pool another try on this nice summer day. It was better with the fountains running. My 4 year old had a great time. Couldn't spend much more than an hour here. It is good affordable option if you have a child under 7 bathrooms were not very clean. Bring flip-flops. All that being said the smiles from my 4 year old were squeally delighted kind which warmed my heart toasted this place.
What am I missing about this swimming pool? I read all these rave reviews about the pool and decided to head down to Rinconada today (a Sat afternoon in Jan). Although the website listed rec swim times as 12:30-4:30pm, there was no one there. None of the fountains were running. The wading pool is really large, but it looked pretty sad without the fountains running. The pool look pretty dirty and the fountains kinda worn. This is nothing like the Silliman Center in Newark which charges almost hte same price. I'll have to try it again in the summer to see if my feelings about Rinconada change. The lap pool looked clean and the water seemed warm enough - maybe 80 degrees? But the bathrooms didn't seem very clean. I think the pool is due for an update overall.
The big kid playground on the other hand was a blast. The equipment isn't brand new, but it good condition. There was a wide variety of climbing structures. Clean sand and bathrooms nearby. Our kids had such a fun time. Location is awesome.
The wading pool for younger kids is truly amazing, and it's usually warm in Palo Alto in the summer so it's a great place to go when it's foggy where you are. There's a lap pool for adults too, and there are lots of other things to do in the vicinity.
I have been taking my two boys, now 10 and 6, to this pool for the past 4 years and we have always had a great time. They have transitioned from the large wading pool to the lap pool and spend hours jumping and diving off the spring boards! If it isn't too busy, I'll even get in a few lanes myself. Coming from Pacifica, this location is a great escape from the fog. If we ever want to get a taste of summer we just pack up our swim gear and take a drive to Palo Alto! Things to consider: The pool is usually only open in Summer (check website for schedule). Entering the pool area is NOT free. Only children under 2 do not have to pay. Ages 3-17 pay $4 and Adults pay $5 (seniors pay $3) even if you do not use the pool! Also, we have noticed that it is less crowded on weekends. I figure it's because the camps usually descend upon here during the week.
My younger daughter LOVES Rinconada Pool. When it is foggy in our neck of the woods it is usually nice and sunny there. There is a pool for little ones with all sorts of fun bells and whistles. There is a larger pool next door with diving boards and lap lanes as well. The pool has a changing area and an outdoor seating area but there are not many chairs and they fill fast. The lifeguards are very attentive and watchful, which I always appreciate (of course I watch my daughter too). My 9 year old daughter has lost interest in the smaller pool and she likes to go off the diving board in the big pool. My 4 year old loves the kiddie pool so I often find myself going back and forth between the two pools. The kiddie pool is very fun and unique but I wouldn't make the drive for the regular pool.
The shallow kids pool is great for young swimmers. The Rinconada pool had all sorts of toys to play on, and fountains. Kids can stay busy here for hours.
The only downfall is that there is not much shade at the pool. Make sure to bring lots of sunscreen! There is plenty of room for parents to sit and watch their kids from the sidelines. You can also swim with your little one if you would like!
This park has a bit of everything. There are two playground areas, one for toddlers and one for older kids. There are sand pits, climbing structures, picnic tables, tennis courts and lots of wide open space to run around.
There's also a fantastic pool for kids to enjoy during the hot summer days complete with fountains and wading pools. My 2 year old is a bit afraid of the water, but the zero depth entrance is great because he can just get his toes wet and have a ball. It's a great place for kids of all levels of swimming expertise.
For older kids, there's a fun place area called the Enchanted Forest to explore and discover and use their imagination in.
Within walking distance are the Palo Alto Junior Museum, the Children's Library, and the local fire department.
