Reelfoot Lake State Park, located in the northwest corner of Tennessee, is one of the greatest hunting and fishing preserves in the nation. The lake encompasses 25,000 acres (15,000 of which are water) and harbors almost every kind of shore and wading bird, as well as the golden and American bald eagles. Other animals are also diverse and abundant here. Its many species of flowering and non-flowering plants attract botany enthusiasts from all over the country. Cypress dominates the margins of the lake, but many other trees and shrubs are also present.
Campgrounds, bathrooms, boardwalk, fishing piers and picnic areas are wheelchair accessible.
While there isn't much to do there that's not nature related, its worth the drive to upper East Tennessee to see the beauty of Reelfoot. The area has some great history and we found some delicious home cooking restaurants...one had a really nice scenic overlook.
The lack is the real draw of this area. All of the trees and vegetation growing out of the lake is stunning. Bring a camera. You can't take a bad picture!
We did find a cute playground on our drive through the park. The structures were modern and it seem to draw quite a few kids.
I grew up near Reelfoot and have always taken it for granted. Now, living far away, it's somewhere I'd like to take my children to experience the culture of the area and to teach them the story behind the development of the lake. There are some great restaurants on the lake, if you like fried catfish and hushpuppies!
