Reed Gold Mine is the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. Come and experience the gold rush first hand here.
While you take the tour of reeds gold mine you will learn not only about the mine but also about how the first gold that was found there was used as a door stop because they didnt know what they had. The tour is a guided tour and you go down into the mine a ways, even on a 90 degree day the mine is nice and cool so no worries of getting to over heated here. Once you are done with your tour for a fair price you can buy a few pans of dirt and pan for your own gold. This was a favorite part of the mine when it came to my family. You also get to keep the gold you found in a small vial of water and share it with friends and family as you tell them about your experience at reeds gold mine. a must see and of course bring your camera!
If you've got a hankering for gold (and who doesn't?) get yourself to Reed Gold Mine, the site of the first documented gold find in the United States. (Take that, California!) Today you can tour the mine and explore the grounds for free. It costs $2 to pan for gold. It's also just a lovely place. Bring a picnic!
Some say there could still be gold in Stanfield. You can try to find some of it as you pan for gold at Reed Gold Mine, off Highway 200. The brown highway signs may confuse you, so from Concord, take U.S. Highway 601, then turn south onto Highway 200. Here you will experience the country’s first gold rush, which started with the discovery of a nugget (big enough to be used as a doorstop) near here in 1799. North Carolina remained the leader of gold production until the California gold rush in 1848. Today visitors at the site can see a film on more of this history, exhibits on the mining process, and the tools the miners used, as well as the underground tunnels of the nation’s first gold mine.
Reed's Gold Mine is a fun and adventurous way to spend the afternoon with your kids! The admission is FREE and there is only a small fee to actually pan for gold! My kids get so excited and are so meticulous panning through the dirt in search for treasure!
Reed Gold Mine is where the first gold in North Carolina was discovered. Today, you can take a tour of the mine and pan for gold. My son was especially fascinated with the idea of discovering his own gold. Admission is free but there is a $2 charge to pan for gold. My son was convinced that he was going to find a million dollars in that $2 worth of dirt!
