Redwood National Park is awesome; there are lots of really great places to see Redwoods in Northern California, and this is one of them. Orick itself is sort of depressing as far as towns are concerned; it's quite small and there's not much to see. If you keep going, however, you can find Fern Canyon, which is AMAZING. Fern Canyon is where Jurassic Park 2 was partially filmed; the part with the little dinosaurs that ate the guy, and you see his blood flowing in the water (gross description, but accurate) was filmed in Fern Canyon! It's so very cool, the walls are just COVERED in ferns and you can do some really nice hikes. It's pretty much impassable in the wet months (late October - April) but nice and dry the rest of the year. I recommend going in spring or early summer to really see the ferns at their greenest. It's amazing, you won't regret it! There are also quite a lot of elk in the area, which you will see if you are lucky. You have to cross two or three small streams to get to the parking lot at the start of the hike to get to the canyon (about a half mile hike to the mouth of the canyon) so you'll need 1. a car that won't get stuck and 2. guts. The streams are usually only 6 inches deep, it's not that bad, but it can look intimidating.
A local resident introduced us to the Red Barn in Orick. A little country store and eatery. Famous for it's homemade berry pies. They were delicious. A quick stop between Ureka and Cressent City. The campground looks like a very popular summer spot.
This is a great park for the family! We stopped in on our way across country. I knew the trees were going to be big, but I was blown away when we seen them. We also saw a mama bear playing with her cubs in the woods. It was a great experience for us and our son. We took some great pictures! Definitely a place to check out with the fam!
This National park comes in second only to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. I love visiting and looking up at the trees, finding peace in nature. You can hike for hours and never cease to be amazed by God's great wonder. Kids will love all the fun facts about these huge Redwoods too.
Twenty-two miles north of Arcata and stretching for more than 40 miles, Redwood National Park is a World Heritage Site encompassing three state parks: Prairie Creek, Del Norte, and Jedediah Smith.
There are more than 300 developed campsites in the three state parks within the national park, as well as shoreline trails and beaches, swimming in the Smith River and Redwood Creek, and ranger-guided tours. You will need a free permit to drive the steep, 17-mile road to Tall Trees Grove, where a mile-round-trip walking trail leads to some of the world’s tallest trees. The first mile or so of the easy, flat Redwood Creek Trail along the creek is okay for strollers. In late summer and fall, kids can wade in the stream bed; with older kids, wear your tennis shoes and walk up the creek, looking for swimming holes and sandbars.
Redwood Trails Horseback Rides offers rides in the park ($$$$). Kids must be 5 years and up for the regular horseback rides (half hour, one hour, three hours, or six hours); pony rides ($$$) for kids 2 and up (707–488–3895).
Jedediah Smith State Park is a wonderful old growth redwood forest. The highlight is the 5 mile scenic drive with more really large broad trunk redwood trees than you can count. Pretend you are a hobbit riding a carriage through the trees. Kids just love getting out and crawling into the large cavities in tree trunks and gazing at the enormous cross sections of fallen trees. Scout Memorial Grove is a stroller friendly short .5 hike . Perfect hike for young children. Lots of fallen tree trunks that children can balance and crawl into. Detours off the main trail allow access to Smith River where children will spend endless hours playing with the smooth round river stones and fast moving water.
