The 2-mile walk to reach Race Point Lighthouse is along the Cape Cod National Seashore’s Race Point Beach (bring refreshments, especially drinks; the long sandy walk back to the car can be tough for kids). Race Point Lighthouse was erected in 1816 to help ships navigate around the treacherous “knuckles” of the Cape to Provincetown. Between 1816 and 1946 more than a hundred shipwrecks were recorded in this area. Race Point Lighthouse has a white light and a foghorn that warns ships of low-visibility conditions. Race Point Lighthouse is managed by the Coast Guard although it’s on Cape Cod National Seashore grounds. If your family doesn’t have the energy to take the long walk to Race Point, the best view is from the Province Lands Visitor Center’s observation deck. Race Point Lighthouse is also visible from Herring Cove Beach.
