One of the largest and most beautiful state parks in Pennsylvania, Raccoon Creek State Park has about 7,000 acres and Raccoon Creek Lake, which itself is more than one hundred acres.
Located within Raccoon Creek State Park, only steps east of the park entrance, is the 315-acre Wildflower Reserve, where you can choose between easy walking trails and trails with gentle grades. Your best bet to see the most blooms is April or May, but something is blooming from late March through summer. If you’re lucky, you might see deer, raccoons, wild turkeys, mink, birds, and other wildlife. Comfortable shoes are a must. On Soldier Days you can view historic reenactments, military displays, and more.
Recreational facilities include boating, hiking, camping, swimming, and picnicking. Modern family cabins are available year-round, with electric heat, kitchens, and toilets.
While you’re in Raccoon Creek State Park, you may wish to visit Frankfort Mineral Springs, about 0.5-mile south of the park entrance. From the 1790s to 1932, this was the site of a popular spa where many people were attracted to the purported medicinal properties of the spring water. Call (724) 899–2200.
