"Quite fascinating!"

The best way to see the petroglyphs is to take the well-marked, 11⁄2-mile path that leads through the field. It’s a short hike and, although the heat can be stifling, it’s very easy and suitable for young children. (Be sure to wear hiking shoes and bring some water along. Hot lava radiates heat like a lit barbecue pit.) It’s a  fascinating experience to walk among the 3,000-plus etchings on the rocks in this 233-acre park. These are considered some of the oldest, finest, and most extensive petroglyph examples in all Hawaii. Look for circles outlining a small hole. Families placed their infants’ umbilical cords in the hole to forever connect them to the land, aina, and ensure a long and healthy life.
