"A "mini" zoo"

Prospect park zoo is perfect as part of a day in Prospect Park. The small size of the zoo means you can see every exhibit and then have time for a picnic lunch or play on the playgrounds in the park.
Easily accessible on the Q line, the zoo has a good variety of animals, organized in a way that allows you to take breaks indoors at times.
The sea lion feeding is certainly a highlight of the day, as is the small path near the groundhogs where kids can "hatch" out of an egg, jump the lilypads, & climb a spider's web.
It's easy to forget you are in the middle of Brooklyn, the trees all around give a level of privacy to the zoo and help deflect some of the noise from the cars on Flatbush Ave.
We went in early October when a coat isn't needed and the foliage is still lush. In winter it may look a little dreary.
There a few snack machines and an area set up for eating at tables, we chose to bring a picnic lunch.
The indoor area set aside for exploring activities were fun for our son but I doubt kids over the age of 10 would be interested in them.
Overall, it's a good zoo for the size and is easy to finish in a few hours at a leisurely pace.

"Our kids enjoyed this outing"

We visited this zoo in June of 2009 while we were visiting my mom in New York City and my little ones seemed to enjoyed the experience.  The zoo is relatively small which works well for young children who get tired very quickly.  The petting zoo area was nice as it gave my little ones the opportunity to get closer to the animals.  Our children also enjoyed the feeding of the sea lions which they had only seen on the Planet Earth DVDs.
Great things about the zoo:
Easily accessible by public transportation
Small enough to hold a toddlers attention without overstimulating him / her but large enough to have a good variety of animals.
Has easy access to restroom facilities
Provides great learning opportunities for home schoolers.

I would definitely take my children here again since their appreciation for the animals there would increase as they get older.
