My husband and I love Saturday Market, and try to go whenever we're in Portland, but it's a little more difficult with a toddler. He gets a little bored as we walk through the booths, but he does love all the music, so we stop and listen and clap and dance. He is a people watcher, so he also enjoys watching and waving at all the people at the market.
My family and I love to go to the Saturday Market. They have great vendors, good music and some awesome food! And now since they have expanded all the way to the waterfront, their stage and line of food carts end right near a big fountain. So we can grab a bite to eat and listen to music while the kids play in the fountain. Try to avoid bringing a stroller if you can. The aisles get narrow and it can get very crowded.
This is a spot that we like to take our out of town guests to if they don't have something similar in their own hometown. They always seem to enjoy seeing all the diversity of downtown Portland. It's always amusing to people watch here, you spot some very unique individuals. If you need to find a unique gift this would be the place, though much seems expensive to me. My boys do not enjoy it for longer than 20 minutes, they are 8 & 10. Usually not worth it to take them with us. This is something we like to do without them so we can stroll along and take our time looking at things without them harrassing us to hurry up or buy them everything. I think teens would enjoy it on their own, meeting up with parents later. Their are balloon artists, face painters, and entertainers that toddlers would enjoy. It's a great activity on a nice summer day.
This is one of Portland's best treausres. So much to see, lots of street entertainers and inexpensive food vendors. The craft sellers are strictly vetted so the items for sale are really nice quality. Definately a Bohemian feel to this one. But the best part is probably the people watching!
The Portland Saturday Market is totally unique. I've never been to another market like it. There is a huge variety of vendors, and there are always street performers trying to make a couple bucks. The food is really great, and most of the booths are pretty cool. It is usually pretty crowded, so I don't like to bring a stroller, but if you did, you can always make a way through the crowd. The waterfront is really beautiful (and clean!)
I have really enjoyed Portland's Saturday Market - there is a very eclectic mix of vendors and the setting, Portland's waterfront, is beautiful. Whether you want to see local artisans selling their wares, pick up some flowers for your dinner-table, or enjoy the antics of street jugglers, Portland's Saturday Market will not disappoint. Give yourself time and wear comfortable shoes - there's a lot to take in!
The market itself is too crowded for us. Not really stroller friendly, so you may want to use a carrier. Great place to break out the Ergo, for sure!
Very colorful assortment of people! We enjoy walking the waterfront and getting out of the crowd a bit.
If you're shy or adverse to 'eccentrics' this may not be the place for you.
So much to see! So much to eat! So much to buy! So much fun for kids!
If we find ourselves in Portland on a Saturday, we have to wander through the Saturday market under the Burnside Bridge. Last time, I found a knit hat I couldn't pass up, and the boys found handmade puzzles. We all ate well.
Whenever I am up in Oregon I love making it to the Saturday Market. It is almost like a weekly fair! The wares are wonderful and the food is yummy! Musicians also help set the tone. Be aware that it can be very crowded and may not entertain the little ones.
It's open nearly all year, but the best time to go is during the summer. That's when the most people are there, and people watching is one of the main reasons to go! There's shopping (all NW businesses/artists), food, music, and various entertainers (gotta love the statue man!).
It can get really crowded, so the smaller the stroller, the better. There's no way I would let my toddler walk around there during the summer just because it's so busy.
There's not a lot that's specifically geared toward kids, but it's a great family outing that people of all ages seem to enjoy!
