This 10 acre park has many unique areas for play and recreation, or to even host a barbecue on a special day.
Ponderosa Park has the following features:
* Basketball Courts
* Children’s Play Area
* Horseshoe Pits
* Multi-use Field
* Restrooms
* Sand Vollyball Court
* Tennis Courts
Ponderosa park is aptly named, with its overarching canopy of what I assume to be leafy, grand Ponderosa trees. These magificent giants provide this park with a generous amount of dappled shade, which is a welcome relief in the summer months, and with inviting piles of leaves which kids can jump into to celebrate the advent of autumn.
The park is well-equipped, with full restrooms available on site, which is a nice change from the portable toilets found at many neighborhood parks these days. Picnic tables are situated along the gently rolling hills, and there are large grassy areas perfect for your pickup game of soccer, Ultimate frisbee or just for running off some steam.
While there is an array of play equipment appropriate for all different ages, some of the structures are outdated, and may present some challenges to the vigilant parent. The climbing structures for older children are steep, with weathered wooden beams exhibiting some splintering, and the slides are metal, making them dangerously hot in the summer. The jungle gym for younger children is more contemporary, designed to look like a circus train, and offers a safe environment for imaginative play. There are also several of the spring-mounted "ride-'em" ponies so popular with the preschool crowd and two oversized cannons which create fun opportunities for Revolutionary War reenactments or simply for climbing atop. The entire play area is situated in a giant sand box; the sand appears relatively clean and offers some cushioning from potential falls.
Overall, this is a convenient and attractive neighborhood park which offers the basic amenities one needs for an enjoyable picnic or a couple of hours of vigorous play, but not one that would be worth a special trip.
Morning walkers were more in evidence in this park, with shading trees and pleasant sites. The childrens' play area is small, but different. Picnic tables are in a defined, sunken area. A large field is adjacent to the shaded area, and there are rest rooms.
