"Beautiful doesn't cover it"

The highway to the area just stops at the lookout and trailhead, so you can't miss it.  Parking can be a problem, but it's all roadside, so you just park further down the road.  There aren't any concessions or rest rooms there, but you pass through Kapa'au on the way, so plan accordingly.  The hike down to the beach is easy when dry,  but don't forget you have to come back up.  And the views are simply magnificent, both from the top and the bottom of the trail.

If you have time, go over to Wai'pio Valley and get the views from the other direction -- it's only a few miles straight across, but by car you have to go all the way around the island to get there.

"Breathtaking"

From the Pololu Valley Lookout, you can see the astounding beauty of the Hamakua Coast. A series of trails here transcend five lush, relatively uninhabited valleys to Waipio, the most well known. By all means, do take the short trail to the bottom of the valley, where a beautiful black-sand beach awaits you. The trail takes about fifteen minutes and can be slippery if recent rains have fallen. But, slippery or not, this is one of the prettiest hikes in all Hawaii.
