Point State Park is at the tip of Pittsburgh's "Golden Triangle." It commemorates and preserves the strategic and historic heritage of the area during the French and Indian War (1754 - 1763). Visitors walk along paved promenades on the riverfront and to overlooks for dramatic views of Pittsburgh, its busy waterways, scenic hillsides and many bridges. A bike and in-line skate route through Point State Park connects the North Shore Trail, the South Side Trail, and the Eliza Furnace Trail via bicycle routes through the city of Pittsburgh.
Every year, Point State Park has lots of festivals, regattas, and great fun in the Pittsburgh area. Point State park is the exact spot that 3 rivers come together in the center of the city. There is a beautiful fountain, and is the absolute PERFECT spot to watch fireworks. The city is redoing a whole new area right along the water with bike paths, walking areas, all perfect to take a family. Nice wide open spaces for kids to play and burn off excess energy! A great stroller park and place to spend the afternoon.
Point State Park is the traditional heart of Pittsburgh. It was the site of the original Fort Pitt, which succeeded Fort Duquesne in 1758. Under renovation until the end of 2007, the park has a paved promenade to the 100-foot, geyser-like fountain where you can enjoy the view of the confluence. Old-fashioned sternwheelers, Jet Skis, and kayaks zip around the point in warm weather, and the park is a popular site for outdoor concerts. The planned improvements include performance space and outdoor cafes. You can even go fishing (there are fifty varieties of fish in the newly clean rivers).
