High on top of Lookout Mountain, Point Park was built in 1905 to commemorate the "Battle Above the Clouds." A majority of the fighting took place on the mountain side and not in the park's vicinity.
This park does have great views but not much else. There is a small fee to enter the park and its really not worth is. Exhibits are ok but do not always give a lot of information. A good place for history buffs perhaps. Not really a safe place to take smaller children.
Point Park/Lookout Mountain Battlefield is a National Park Service location. It is one of the few locations that charges money for admission. Honestly we have been to numerous NPS locations, and there is no good reason why there is an admission fee here, because it is not up to the standard of other (free) NPS locations. The tour is self-guided, but there is not good signage to tell you where to go first, second, etc. We completed the Junior Ranger program here, and actually identified a few places in the program where answers were not available because exhibits had been removed. The Park Rangers were kind enough to provide the answers, but it further demonstrates that this site needs to be reviewed and updated by the NPS. The interior exhibits are adequate but small. Point Park is pretty but again, unless you know what you are looking for, there is not a well-organized tour and a cohesive message of why the park exists and why it is important to history.
You can see great views of Chattanooga and the river valley from atop Lookout Mountain. And, for a history lesson, you can view the monuments, cannons, and plaques dedicated to the soldiers and history of the Battle of Lookout Mountain. There are not guard rails in the areas that over look the sides of the mountain, so you must be vigilant with small children in this area. Parking fills up quickly on the weekends for this park.
