Go to Pioneer Tunnel for a quality education in coal mining. The adventure starts with a ride into the mine on old mining cars. Deep inside the Tunnel, guests alight from the cars to follow their guides as they give an explanation of deep-mining methods. The other featured attraction is a narrow gauge steam train ride aboard the Lokie Henry Clay.

How fascinating was this trip!
First you get a chance to tour the mining area on a steam train, getting to take in some fantastic views of the mountain side.
Then, you climb into a mining car and head down into the mining shafts and get a chance to really learn how a coal mine works.
The kids thought this was really interesting and loved that they were undergound. I did not love that i didn't have an infant carrier and had a large toddler who couldn't walk yet that had to be passed back & forth from my husband to me (my arms were KILLING me by the end of the tour).
It really was an interesting tour, esp the fact that it was FREEZING inside the mines on a hot July afternoon. CRAZY!
If you didn’t visit the Lackawanna Coal Mine in Scranton—or if you and your kidsenjoyed it so much you’re ready for another mine tour—then head to Ashland and the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine. Like the Scranton mine, this is an actual coal mine. When the coal company shut it down, some local volunteers and former miners transformed it into a fascinating study of a coal miner’s life. Visitors enter the mine in open mine cars, just as the miners did when they started their workdays. After the thirty-five-minute mine tour, take a ride on a narrow-gauge steam loco-motive, the Henry Clay. Along the 1.5-mile round-trip, you’ll see two other examples of coal mining: a strip mine and a bootleg coal mine, where men snuck past guards to get coal to sell or to heat their own homes. You can see the smoke rising from the ground as a result of the famous Centalia mine fire.
