"Careful with altitude sickness"

We planned a trip to take the kids to Colorado to see real snow (we live in TX) The drive up is always scary and we stopped to let the kids touch the snow piled up on the sides. It was so funny to hear my son holler that it was cold.  As we got higher, I started to feel ill.  I had been here many times before kids, but this time I got incredibly light-headed and nauseated. I ended up sitting in the car while my husband showed the kids around. I weighed a little more, but in no worse shape than I had been in before. I think it was just the quick trip up from TX that affected me, although no one else had a problem.

"Patience but worth it"

If your kids like driving and sitting still in a car for the trip up and the trip back you are alright. You basically wind around this peak until you get to the visitors center on top. I recommend getting some hot cocoa and donuts, we didn't get them because no one told us how great they were before hand and it was not worth it to make another trip for just a doughnut. Make sure to follow the instructions of how to keep your car from overheating on the way down. We just kept the car in 2nd gear to prevent any issues. I am sure you can visit their website to see if they have any recommendations on vehicles. There is also a standard gift shop at the top and many grand views. Bring your camera!!!!

"A must see!"

No trip to  Colorado Springs is complete without a visit to the top of Pike's Peak, the tallest mountain in the lower 48.  Either enjoy the scenic drive up Pike's Peak Highway or take your time on the Cog railway that departs from Manitou Springs, but enjoy the view and changing scenery on the way up.  At the top, don't forget to try some of the famous mountain-top donuts in the gift shop.

"Stunning view"

Pikes Peak is very fun to explore, whether you drive or take the cog. The view is really cool, and the store at the top has famous homemade doughnuts. Another user commented to bring your coat which is a great tip because it gets chilly up there! In the summer there is still some snow on the top.

"Bring your coat!"

No matter what time of year you go to the top of Pikes Peak...remember to bring a coat. It is always chilly on the peak. The train ride is a great way to go when you have kids. The views are out of the world! You might even get lucky and see the Big Horn Sheep. Like I said, it's cold but the hot chocolate at the top makes up for it!

"breathtaking"

When we got to the top of the peak we were just in awe. It is so beautiful up there with so many views! The gift store has some neat little things you can get as souvenirs and some great food because I am sure you will be hungry! Great place to take a calm relaxing trip and lots of gorgeous pictures of the scenery as well as of yourself.

"Top Of The World?!"

We drove up Pikes Peak when it opened after the winter season, and wow, was it incredible!  The views are outstanding and that's definitely the highest up I've ever been!  The winding road was a little scary if you're not a fan of heights, but when you get to the top, it's worth it!  Also, stop at the visitor's center for history information on the mountain and yummy snacks!  :)

"Beautiful!"

The top of the mountain is really cold. The drive up had my anxiety spiking. It was all worth the view, totally gorgeous. There are rest areas through out to stop and picnic. But watch how far into those areas you go we had some all to friendly bees attracted to our sandwich's..yeah really weird.

"Gorgeous!"

The views at the top of Pike's Peak are simply breathtaking!  Our family chose to take the cog railway to the top, instead of driving.  When we got to the top, we were amazed at just how beautiful (and cold!) it was!  Make sure to have one of the famous Pike's Peak donuts while you're up there!

"Awesome Views!!!"

We took the Cog Railway to the top of Pike's Peak. The ride was so beautiful! An hour of the best scenery! At the top the view was great and we even had snow in June! Just what my daughter wanted at the top! Besides hot chocolate and a doughnut! If you don't want to drive the hairpin curves yourself, this is the way to go!!

"Pike's Peak"

This trail, mountain, beauty is so wonderful.  Experiencing the great outdoors together was brilliant.  There is nothing bad to say about exploring Pike's Peak.  I love to travel to this specific destination, and make a point to go there every time we travel to Colorado.

"Drive on up, but bring a coat!"

This is a great day trip, and a must do activity when visiting Colorado! Katherine Lee Bates composed the words to America the Beautiful after a long and arduous trip to the top of Pike's Peak, and you can be just as inspired by the view from the Peak!  Driving up, you can stop at the beautiful Crystal Reservoir and take a peek through the binoculars there. You will probably encounter a Golden Marmot or two along the road, and keep your eyes pealed for the Rocky Mountain goats! It's the easiest way to get to the top of a fourteener!  Just don't forget your jacket, as it is usually 40 degrees colder at the top of the peak than at the bottom!

"Views to die for"

You can either drive up to the summit or take the cog railway which is pricey. Parts of the roadway are not paved.  It is a thrill ride but the trip up to Pike's Peak is totally worth it.   We were there the end of Sept and it was cold about 30* F on the summit and it did start to snow a little, which was an awesome ending to a great trip up the summit. They do have a nice little cafe and visitors center. Although if you want to eat up there you should be up there before 4p. I think they may stop serving at 5. I can only imagine how breathtaking it could be up on the summit in the winter with all the snow around. I would love to go back some time in the winter.
