Camping conditions are crowded but surprisingly anonymous like urban So crowded, it's urban dwelling camping! No water spigets at campsites but firerings, and decent bathrooms. The key to happiness here is the location it's fabulous just minutes north of spectacular Pfeiffer Beach and for an after beach treat go further south and present yourself and 7yrs and older at Post Ranch for a drink (only outside deck access at PR, we didn't try Ventana's lovely Cielo) to enjoy the luxury venue and views. Sun. am hike the short steep trail to Pfeiffer Falls then go south to Nepenths Kiva
Cafe for a mellow lunch and kiddie menu quesadillas or PBJ for $5
The park is beautiful. We camped in the campground which is nice in some parts and not nice in others. Our site was totally exposed, dry, and full of poisen oak! Not good with kids. The sites in the back of the campground are in a more wooded area and some are beautiful with privacy. The park has a creek running through it, nice hiking trails and it's just a short drive to the beach.
The most popular, easily accessible, and family-friendly park in the area, a place tohike, picnic, and fish on the Big Sur River. Short trails around the campground lead to giant redwoods, a waterfall, river boulders, and pools. A 1.8-mile creekside loop brings you to 60-foot Pfeiffer Falls in a fern canyon and to dazzling ridgetop views. Docent-led nature walks to Pfeiffer Beach are given in summer.
There are more than 200 developed, tree-shaded campsites on the river, and bathhouses, motel/cabins, picnic areas, a restaurant, laundromat, and camp stores. Next to the park at Big Sur Station, park rangers hand out trail maps and give advice on trail conditions.
