For an unusual one-hour side trip, walk on an easy, 0.25-mile path through a redwood forest turned to stone six million years ago by a volcanic eruption, a site you’re not likely to see elsewhere. One-hundred-foot tree trunks are swirled in opalescent puple and pink. The gift shop sells colorful polished stones, semiprecious gems, and fossils. Wheelchair access is marginal but doable; pets are okay.
The petrified forest is full of wood that has been, well, petrified. Its so unique and interesting - and especially learning about the forces of nature that caused it to be so. Kids interested in science will especially love this place. Check it out!
