"Come only for events"
I arrived at Pershing square the week AFTER the ice skating winter event ended. There was nothing at all for my kids to do, and the park was pretty full of a wide-variety of intimidating characters.
The cultural and family events they offer seem to be great; just make sure you arrive during that time or you will be disappointed.
