"Our Family's Favorite Lu'au"

Lu'au have long been a part of Polynesian culture.  Ancient Polynesians would gather to celebrate and pay tribute to ancestral gods for their good fortune with song, dance, and offerings of food. Today's Polynesian families still hold lu'au to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays and graduations. While most of these are private gatherings rarely attended by visitors to the islands, many resorts, hotels, and private companies offer guests the opportunity to attend a lu'au and experience for themselves the traditional foods, songs, and dance of this ancient celebration.

Our family’s favorite is Paradise Cove Lu’au on Oahu's leeward side at Ko Olina. It is one of the biggest and most popular lu'au on the island and it does a first rate job of reproducing the traditional lu'au ceremonies. Upon arrival guests are free to spend some time exploring the Paradise Cove Hawaiian Village and enjoying some traditional Polynesian activities before the feast begins. This is the part of the experience that most children, ours included,  enjoy the most! Spread throughout the village are ancient Polynesian games such as 'O'o ihe (spear throwing) or 'Ulu Maika (rolling stone disks) that children can try their hand at or the whole family can go for an outrigger canoe ride around the Paradise Cove Lagoon. Other popular activities are lei making and getting a Polynesian (temporary) tattoo. The lu’au ceremonies begin with the Hukilau Ceremony followed by the Royal Court Procession and the Imu Ceremony. Guests are then treated to a traditional lu'au feast followed by the Paradise Cove Revue.

The Revue offers lots of hula and music from all of the islands of Polynesia sure to get your toes tapping and leave you sitting in amazement, including the very popular Tahitian hula and crowd pleasing fire dancing. They even offer hula lessons for those who want to attempt it! In addition to the wonderful show, Paradise Cove boasts a spectacular beach side setting which gives guests a front row seat to one of the best locations on the island to watch the sunset!

Prices for the lu'au vary based on which lu'au package you buy, the difference in price really only translates into seat location for the show (all of them are good) with the exception of the Deluxe package. The Deluxe package is sit-down dining instead of the buffet-style the other packages offer.

Regardless of the package you buy, there are a few things to consider for parents. There are no high chairs or booster seats available, so you will need to bring your own or make do with the plastic chairs provided. Also, most of the village and lu'au area is sand, making strollers difficult to push around. We recommend bringing a jogging type stroller with the larger wheels which should make it easier to maneuver if you have to bring one. Bathroom facilities are good and have changing tables available for use. There are kama'aina rates available with valid I.D. and military can purchase tickets at local I.T.T. offices at steeply discounted rates. All packages include roundtrip transportation from Waikiki hotels if needed. Weekends tend to be more crowded so we recommend going during the week if feasible. Children will love all the activities that are available for them to participate in and the whole family will enjoy the after dinner show. The sunsets are phenomenal, the food is good, the music and dancing fantastic, and the staff extremely friendly. All of this combines to make this particular lu'au a great experience and a terrific night out for the family.

"The Best Luau"

This is the best Luau I have ever been too, I have been to the Isalnd a handlfil of times and this one never fails to be the best! I recomend taking the bus there as it is a bit of a drive if you are staying in waikiki, the last time we went we couldn't take the bus as it was a little difficult with such a small child but next time we will. They really know how to keep it fun from pick up to drop off.

As you walk in you are greeted with Mai Tais and leis, they take your piture and lead you to the activity area, you have your choice are game and crafts such as lei making and palm tree folding. Next the have a ceremonial tree climbing and net casting. Then the pre-show starts just before sunset and eveyone move the the tables. The fire show and hula dancing are so great! The food was exceptional especially dessert! This place is a must see!
