This is such a hidden gem! What is free anymore these days? The Zollman zoo, and Oxbow park have trails, shade, and animals! There are large areas for the kids to run, and you can get relatively close to the animals. MN native animals as well. Small petting zoo area. This is no frills, but great area to run, play, be kids, and it is FREE!!
I had the opportunity to chaperone my son's kindergarten class field trip to Oxbow. I was pleasantly surprised. The zoo is small enough that the kids can explore and you can still keep an easy eye on them. Even with the field trips it was not nearly too crowded.
You can get really up close and personal with some of the animal exhibits, but not too close. We had the pleasure of witnessing the birth of twin deer fawns the morning of our visit, and the kids really liked the dancing porcupines. In addition, there are short hiking trails to explore.
There are picnic areas with adjacent play areas for each, and a foot bridge over a clear creek where you can see the fish below, although these facilities are far enough away from the zoo that you would probably want to drive over to access them.
Oxbow park provides plenty of opportunity for the family to explore and have fun. It's not overwhelming in size, so it is perfect for the younger kids. The zoo houses a good variety of animals. There is also a small nature center for further information and answering questions. Ages: 1 year, 3 years
