Before you get into town, you’ll pass the OTEC Natural Energy Labs. It’s worth a small side trip to tour this fascinating facility. Here, cold water is pumped from thousands of feet below the ocean’s surface, mixed with warm water, and used to generate electricity and provide a suitable environment for aquaculture. Strawberries, lobsters, kelp, and abalone are being cultivated here.
