At the Orpheum Children's Science Museum, we provide children the opportunity to explore and understand their world through engaging exhibits and innovative programming, creating an atmosphere where imagination, learning and fun combine to encourage a life-long interest in science.
We are in our 19th year of enriching our community through camps, after school, classes, special events, exhibits and field trips. The Orpheum has great birthday parties, facility rentals, and volunteer opportunities. We are located in downtown Champaign, Illinois.
I've always heard about this quaint little museum in Champaign. Last year I finally took my son there. He loved it! He loved the sand area outside and the dinosaur sculpture. I hear it's a great place to hold a birthday party. They are planning to expand. We can't wait to go there again! I don't recall the prices...but it was not expensive at all. Well worth the money!
This is a quaint museum that is constantly expanding. It's inside an old theater. It's in the newly renovated area of town. We love the outdoor "fossil" dig, the resident pets, and the model steamboat. My autistic daughter loves the great water table and tornado maker. We plan to visit again when more renovations are done.
Housed in a 1914 theater building, this museum opened in the late 1990s and underwent further expansion in 2000 and 2001.
Inside are a variety of hands-on exhibits that make learning about science fun. For example, kids can walk a 14-foot plank or operate a block and tackle to experience the amazing scientific principles of such simple machines as the lever and the pulley, which enable people to lift objects much heavier than their own weight.
The Bernoulli Blower suspends a ball in midair, and
the Ghost Images exhibit plays tricks with light. Younger children will be drawn to the plastic human torso model, the cardboard blocks, and the PVC pipe organ.
In the outdoor Dino Dig area, visitors use paleontologists’ tools to unearth mock dinosaur bones. Kids can sift through sand to find little polished rocks in Kiki’s Gem Mine.
