The Oregon Shakespeare Festival is a great event for kids 6 and up. A critically acclaimed festival filled with thespian performances, musicals and more. Be sure to check for Family Days where the performances include a pre-show introduction to the show for kids. Kids 6 and up are allowed to shows, but be sure to check on what the recommended age is for each individual show.
My grandparents used to volunteer as ushers for the festival. They were called "red coats". My time spent at the festival was incredible. So many children think of Shakespeare as not being cool, but the reality is that my siblings and I could not get enough of the performances. Even my younger brother who has difficulty with attention span, found the plays really fun and held his attention. We went from the ages of 10 on.
My favorite was "The Merry Wives of Windsor". Actually any play where the character Falstaff had a role made me excited ;).
This is truly one event not to miss in Ashland!
I love the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. I've experienced it several times and have always found it to be an exhilarating, restful and enchanting respite. Your first charming glimpse will likely be the sight of madrigals performing on a cobbled square while dancers parade by in flowing garb. The real treat, of course, comes in the evening when you enter the magnificent outdoor theater - you literally step into a magical place unlike any other. I highly recommend Midsummer Night's Dream and Macbeth as these are my favorite performances but honestly, you can't go wrong. Even if you've never seen Shakespeare performed, this festival will cast a spell that beckons you back again and again.
OSF has been a tradition for my husband's family for years. We've continued the tradition after marriage, and our kids have been partaking in the festivities for many years now.
When I first heard suggestions that we go to "Shakespeare Festival" I have to admit I laughed. All I could picture was stuffy actors with bad accents and over-the-top costumes. And while, yes, the costumes may be over-the-top they are fantastically so! Many of the plays take modern twists on old classics, musicals are re-vamped and set to contemporary backdrops, and you might even witness Puck dressed up as a cross-dressing fairy.
Every year there are 12 plays, some of which are more than appropriate for all ages. While plays might be performed in verse, the actors are superb and very physical so even when our son was in Kindergarten he was enraptured. OSF also hosts back-stage tours, historical walking tours, and numerous opportunities to delve deeper into the world of theater and Shakespeare.
The town of Ashland boasts a beautiful park, specialty shops chock full of kid-friendly items and toys, and also some wonderful family restaurants and coffee shops, too!
You won't be sorry you visited this spectacular town and show!
