I have been going to OMSI for years and I am so excited to take my kids there over the next decades. Even though my son is still young, there are rooms downstairs where he can still run and explore and learn and have a great time. The submarine is an awesome experience too.
Our family loves OMSI! There are so many activities and different things to learn. The location is fun and the exhibits are always great. There is a submarine, IMAX theater and so much more! A great place for adults and kids alike - can tend to be busy because it really is a great stop to make!
OMSI is a wonderful place for the entire family. That is the one place my husband takes the kids when I am at work because he enjoys it just as much as they do! There are all kinds of fun puzzle and sceince stuff to figure out and play with. They have the laser show and a real sub that you can go in. The Omnimax is cool too. They also have a playroom with tons of stuff for the kids to play with. Diffinitely worth your time.
This is the best of the best in museums. They have so much to do and see including an IMAX theater, a real submarine (costs extra), planetarium (also costs extra) and my very favorite part....the jet boat rides in the summer. Not to be missed! There aren't many restaurants within walking distance but a fast food place there.
I have to small boys (ages 3 and 1) and OMSI is the one place where my husband and I have as much fun as the kids! OMSI has captivating stationary exhibits for adults, as well as a new always changing exhibit. Then they have an awesome exploration hall for older kids, including a ball room where the goal is to figure out different ways to throw balls! The best part to me is the children's play area, only for kids 6 and under. They 2 water tables, a sand area, blocks, kitchen and puppet stand and an exploration area just for under 24 mos. Plus they have the Omnimax theatre, which you watch movies in a dome-shaped screen. If you are in Portland, OR, you have to go to OMSI!
This is a great place for older kids (at least age 3 and up). It has a lot of very cool things to explore, but for the price it's not somewhere you would take your family to very often. Save it for a special outing for you and your kiddo. Worth the money every now and again.
I titled this review "Can't say enough great things about OMSI" because I really can't say enough great things about it! First, it is located on the beautiful Willamette river, which you can walk down to and check out. Also, they have a really great cafe inside OMSI, as well as a good restaurant. The gift shop is great. My daughter loves to go in there and play with all the toys they have out to sample. OMSI has things that are great for every single age. There is a "science playground" that caters toward children 5 and under, with all sorts of stations- animal research, water play, blocks, balls, a playground, and an arts and crafts room that is open all day and has projects available for the kids to do as they please. They even have a baby area for kids under 2. The rest of OMSI is geared toward school aged kids, though when my young adult siblings come visit, they always want to go here. There are hundreds of hands-on activities that are all educational. This place is really great!
We can't go through winter without OMSI. We're there almos evey other weekend and sometimes more often. You can't get enough of OMSI. We usually go for two hours at a time and focus on one area. Membership is $90 for family of 6. Members get disocuts for Max theatre, submarine and planitirium. Sometimes there're promotions; $20 off ended Dec 31 and $40 off last summer. Totally worth it. The science playground is so much fun. There's non-permanent exhibit downstairs. My son lately enjoys the chemistry and physics labs.
My daughter was given an OMSI year pass for her birthday and it was a great gift! With three kids of varied age ranges there is something for everyone. My little one likes to play in the sand and water area and my two older children like exploring some of the experiments. We always run out of time. It's also a great way to spend the day when the weather is too cold or rainy to be outside.
My boys always enjoy themselves here but it cost a fortune to get in. We usually wait for the free days, or the discount days. They really like the experiment room now that they are getting older. The phases of a baby from egg to full term still amazes me every time.
We love OMSI - you can easily spend a whole day there. Because it can be spendy, we go on the first Sunday of the month when the price is $2 per person. The exhibits are just fantastic - very well thought out and suited for just about every age level. This place will not disappoint groups with a diversity of interests and abilities - as I said, there's something for everyone!
This is one of the best hands'-on museums I've ever seen (it really does rival San Francisco's Exploratorium). There's a planetarium next door (I believe this is separate admission) that is wonderful, and the upstairs exhibits are great for older kids. Downstairs, you'll find the toddler/baby sections (the sand play space is stellar) and the science lab. Be sure to try a science experiment with your older child, then walk upstairs overlooking the main floor for many do-it-yourself exhibits. You can easily spend all day here!
We visited OMSI on New Year's Eve- and the place was packed! Even so, it was a wonderful museum to visit. The museum is huge, with two wings full of exhibits and small labs to explore. We spent most of our time visiting the traveling dinosaur exhibit and in the human body section, both rooms were full of lots of things to see and read.
Then we discovered the wonderful science playground. Even on a very crowded day, this was a great place to hang out. My 7-month-old baby had fun playing with toys in the infant area, while my 2-year-old and husband wandered around and played with sand and blocks and balls, to name just a few things. I also appreciated that there was a separate nursing room in which I could feed the baby- she's easily distracted, so I always love the museums that have rooms for feeding the littlest ones.
We spent about 3 hours at the museum and could have easily spent longer, there was just so much to do and see. I highly recommend this for any visitor to Portland.
What else can you say about this place. Every couple months there is something new and exciting to explore and as a parent that home teaches their children the learning experience here is never ending.
I tend to learn just as the kids do, there is so much to learn and the learning is made fun at OMSI!
If you go with a group of 6 or more a membership pays for itself. If you think for even a second you might be back in a year pay for the membership. Rainy Portland days makes OMSI a must for any parent! Full of child centered activities and hands on exhibits for all ages, OMSI rivals the best. After, take a walk along the Esplenade and take in the waterfront sights! Great times had by all!
OMSI is a locals favorite for kids. It is a great place for families to head and has a little something for everyone.
On rainy days the Science Playground is a favorite for us. This is a great space for kids 0-6 years old to come and explore. They have place to play with water, and balls that shoot up through tubes, and areas to climb and crawl. There is an area where kids get to play with flubber or playdough or paint and color. There are blocks and a sand pit.
They always have traveling exhibits also. We saw 'Bodies' there and currently they have one on Leonardo Da Vinci.
There is a planetarium, the OMNI-Max theater, the Laser Show, the Submarine tour, and differnt 'Labs'. As adults, we are always entertained, and our little guy has a great time too.
