If your familly likes history, be sure to take them to Old Salem. It's a bit like Williamsburg but a little more authentic since people actually live in the town. The bakery bakes wonderful Moravian cookies and breads in their fireplace oven everyday - yum. Take a ride in a carriage, check out what life was like for the origianl Moravian settler's, shop, and dine at the Calem Tavern which features a Moravian chicken pie.
This is a great place for families with older children. I do not recommend toddlers or even strollers. With the cobblestone it is very hard to push a stroller. The gift stores have some really nice items, but they are not for young children unless you plan on buying what they break. I highly recommend going to the bakery...yummy.
Old Salem is a really neat place to visit. Not only are their guided tours of historic buildings but there is food. When I say food, I am talking about moravian cookies and lunch at the Old Salem Tavern. Don't leave without trying the chicken pot pie. The kids also loved the toy museum. Next time we go, we will spring for a night at a local bed and breakfast to stretch our time here.
