Visit an example of a highly successful communal society from the 19th century. The Old Economy Village interprets and preserves the history and unique material culture of the harmony society.
The site is closed Mondays and holidays, except Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
Old Economy Village was built by the same Christian communal society that built Harmony (see previous entry in this section). Here you can visit seventeen restored buildings and gardens and learn about how this unusual community lived. Your whole visit takes about an hour and a half, including the orientation film Economy: A Place of Promise and a tour of the exhibits, gardens, and buildings. The society had its own textile mill, as well as a tailor, printer, shoemaker, cabinetmaker, locksmith, and more, and the village store still posts the 1827 price list. Kids will enjoy using the hand pump to pour themselves a drink. The Harmony Society’s Natural History Museum opened in fall 2001, and a new visitor center opened in 2003.
Many special events and tours are available, including events such as the Family Festival in June, Erntefest (food festival) in September, and Candlelight Christmas at the village in December. Wheelchair-accessible restrooms, diaper-changing areas.
