Envisioned as a Persian palace by Hudson River School painter Frederick Edwin Church, Olana is his spectacular effort to create a romantic, 3-D landscape work of art. The gilded and tiled mansion was the result of his love of exotic lands. From mixing the vivid paints for the walls himself and filling the rooms with exquisite objects to lanscaping the 250-acre grounds overlooking the Hudson River, Church created his vision.
