Welcome to Ocean Beach, a small beach community a few miles northwest of downtown San Diego. It's a great place to launch your San Diego adventures from and enjoy some fun in the sand.
We used to live in Ocean Beach while our son was a baby. It is a great area, but more for adults and teens. It has a very laid back attitude, hippy and punk. The beach is beautiful, but there are no playgrounds or other features.... just sand, which is great if you have young children that just want to build sand castles. There is a dog beach. Fun to watch all the dogs running into the water, but also a bit crazy and stinky at the same time! When we would walk down to the main strip of stores and restaurants we would get more comments on our dog than our baby! The Farmer's Market is a must-do. So many yummy samples and great deals on fresh flowers.
Great for everyone doing everything! We went to Hodads then we went to the tide pools. We caught sea anemone and fed them little hermit crabs. Then we went to the pier to watch all the fishermen. My son caught a stingray and a yellow tail. It was great for everyone.
I took my son here on a Sunday (06-13-10). The town itself is cute with this great laid-back, fun vibe. However, parking is awful. There was a very small parking lot for the beach so we had to park on the street - 6 blocks away. Lugging 2 kids (mine and my friend's) and all our our stuff that far was a bit burdensome. We changed in the bathroom stalls in front of the beach. Unfortunately, they were dirty and smelled terrible.
The beach itself is beautiful and very clean. The boys had lots of fun playing in the waves but there wasn't really anything else like most other beaches we've been to.
We did have a lot of fun and my son can't wait to go back to the beach, although I think next time I will be checking out a different one.
We often visit a family friend who lives in Ocean Beach while in San Diego. I like this area because it is a relaxing break from all the zoo and amusement park activities. The doggie beach there is a favorite of my son, although it can get crazy crowded on summer weekends.
Ocean Beach is a cute, funky little beach town where families and neighbors co-exist in a creative eclectic community. This small beach town is known for being friendly to stray cats and having pet friendly hotels and dog parks. Families love that it's close to Sea World, it's on the beach, and it's a safe town in the suburbs of a big city.
