Ober Gatlinburg is a year-round amusement park and ski resort with something exciting for everyone. Experience the thrill of a lifetime as you ride down the 1800 foot twin track Alpine Slide or relax as the Chairlift takes you to awe-inspiring views and spectacular photo opportunities of the Smoky Mountains.
It has been several years since I've been to Ober Gatlinburg. We have always driven up the mountain, but you can ride the tram as well. I have not skiied there in years so I won't comment on the ski area, however, they also have an ice skating rink that is super fun. I have been skating many times with friends a family members. It's always fun to circle the ice gliding on a pair of skates. And who doesn't enjoy watching the zamboni clear the ice? Ober Gatlinburg also has lots of booths with Smokey Mountain souvenirs for sale. I enjoy browsing the different crafts and things.
Ober Gatlinburg is so much fun! We have gone a few times and never get tired of it! We love the ice skating rink and can skate for hours! But there is so much more than just ice skating. You ride a neat tram up to the park and the scenic views while on the tram are breath taking! Once you get to the park there is much to do! You can go and look at the bears and animals! They are so cute, especially the otters! You can ice skate, you can ride a chair lift even higher up the mountain and slide down on Alpine Slide! In the fall/winter months you can ski and tube on the mountain. There is much to do!! The prices are a little on the pricey side, but well worth it!
I always go Ice Skating at Ober. You should definitely go! As of December 2010, it only costs $9 for a skate rental and you can spend at least 2 hours skating around and falling down. Sometimes are busier than others, like December, but kids love it. Kids should try new things, especially on vacation.
We took my older daughter, then 4, here for the afternoon and we all loved it. They had a waterslide (no bathing suit required) and you are on a tube and don't have to worry about getting wet. They have putt putt and arcade games as well. However the best part is taking the chairlift up to the top to do alpine sliding, really pretty view! I was actually a little nervous about it because it gets going pretty fast, but my 4 year old went with her Dad down a run and we all had a blast. Really neat and different thing to do.
The ride up and back is fabulous - you really should do it if visiting the area. The windows in the sky lift are low enough that kids can see out just fine. The top is a let down. Lots of strange shops selling over priced stuff. It would be good if you wanted to ice skate though, there's a rink at the summit.
Ober has a little something for everyone in the family! Ice skates even for smaller toddler sized feet and in a rink that isn't super busy so that you can take your time with them. An arcade area with an inflatable bouncer. Small shops and snack shacks line the inside. In addition, take a ride on the tram which overlooks the city and mountains - great views! They also offer a Wildlife Encounter to see wild animals and a play area (which are seasonal) and tubing! The tubing looked like a blast! And, not to forget, skiing! Despite the lack of snow, several of the trails were open for skiing and there were several folks lugging gear into the facility! It is an older building that does need updating, but they have done a great job of catering to everyone here.
we visited the ski resort and were not completely impressed with things. We thought there would be more to do but we were disappointed. It was not ski season and the only thing we found open was the ice skating rink. The amusements were closed. We did go and see the bears that were in the back of one of the stores for $3.00. we watched them for a bit which was fun but overall we were not too impressed with what there was to offer.
What a wonderful place to spend the winter months once the snow starts to fall, there is a lift up to the top of the mountain where you can ski, snowboard, or even ice skate inside. If you do not go during the winter months you can still ice skate, or even ride the concrete slides that have little carts in them that are so much fun. While at the amusement park you can eat at a great price, along with everything is within walking distance.
We have never been during ski season but this is a really neat place to visit even during the summer. Be sure to ride the trolley up and give the Alpine slide a try. The indoor ice skating was fun but bring a jacket and wear long pants if you plan on skating for long. We ended up buying my daughter a hoodie because it did get chilly on the ice.
During the summer, the Gondola ride is a great way to see the Smoky Mountains at their best. It only takes about 10 minutes each way and beats driving up and down the mountain to Gatlinburg. There is a large play area at the top for kids, that is no amusement park, but is a great way to blow off some steam after a long car ride.
For only 8 dollars, you can rent a pair of skates and skate all day long. My son wore a size 7 child's shoe and was only 3yo when we went skating and I was worried that we would not find skates that fit. They had so many different sizes! We spent about an hour and made it around the rink 3x because my guy was so little. Afterward, we went upstairs, bought a coke, and watched the Zamboni clean up the ice (probably more fun than the skating!).
