The gem of the Los Gatos parks, Oak Meadow Park is centrally located. A large 12 acre park featuring a large grass field, large playground area with a real, decommissioned USAF T-33 Jet, bocci ball courts, BBQ and picnic facilities, Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad, W.E. Bill Mason Carousal, access to Vasona County Park, and the Los Gatos Creek Trail. During the summer the train and carousel are open daily. They are only open on the weekends during the school year. Check schedule at http://www.bjwrr.org for exact hours.
Come to Oak Meadow Park and hang out for the day. The playground area is large with both a little kids area and a big kids area complete with swings. The equipment is pretty typical, but what really makes this playground special is the USAF T-33 Jet that sits right in the middle of the action. The moment my boys laid eyes on it, they headed straight in that direction climbing into the cockpit and letting their imaginations run wild.
Although Los Gatos can be hot in the summer, Oak Meadow is surrounded by beautiful old oak trees. There are lots of picnic benches, so bring your lunch or purchase a hotdog from the concession stand near the carousel. You might want to bring along a table cloth though because we had a hard time finding a table that didn't have too many bird droppings on it.
The fun at Oak Meadow only just begins at the playground. The Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad takes you on a ride through the park where you can see get a glimpse of Lake Vasona. It's just $2 per person for a ride. It was such a pleasant ride and surprisingly long. The Carousel is also just $2. If that's not enough entertainment for the day, you can head over to Lake Vasona and rent paddle boats and head out onto the Lake. There are also lots of nicely shaded hiking trails throughout the park that are stroller friendly.
Parking is $6, but there is lots of street parking at the edge of the park if you're willing to walk a little.
This is an expansive park frequented by picnicking church groups and birthday children. The climbing structures (including a model airplane!) are stimulating and creative, but might be tough for little kids. Actually, it's tough for parents to watch little kids since it is such a large, open space. So, be sure you have a good parent child ratio.
The train is fabulous. Three cheers for the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad.
Since our 3 year old son's been born, we love coming to Oak Meadow Park. There's just so much to do. Bike riding/walking with a stroller on the walking path over to Vasona Lake. Heading to the playgrounds and climbing on board the firetruck and fighter jet. Taking a ride on a miniature train (Billy Jones) or carousel. Having a picnic lunch in the picnic area or on the grass.
We always catch a Billy Jones Wildcat Train is a miniature open-air steam train that's about a 15-20 minute ride. There's a turntable at the end where the kids can watch the engine turnaround. Go early especially in the summer weekends because the lines get long. We waited about 30 minutes the last time we were there in March.
There's a small burger shack next to the train that's got some hot dogs and burgers if you're looking for lunch. The lines again get long after the train rides. Buy the food before you board and keep the receipt. Pick up your food after you get off the train.
There are fees for the park's parking lots, so we just usually park for free on University and walk into the park.
One of the biggest parks we've been to and so much to do.
Bring your shovels/buckets because there is a huge sand area to play in.
Fire truck, playground and pretty cool airplane to play on. Huge grassy park, but beware of the bee's in the summer time. Bring cash for the Billy Jones train, the wonderful carousel and of course snacks, like snowcones in the summertime. During the holidays they put up great Christmas lights and you can drive through the park (for a fee). If you do adventure out there during Christmas, go early because you don't want to get stuck in the long line to get in. Or you can take the train through the park, dress warm.
Pack a picnic and head to this park. It can get really hot in the summer but it's a great place for families.
