The Oak Island Lighthouse can be climbed to the top. 131 steps in total to the top. There's a 2nd level tour offered twice per week. Tours to the top of the tower and outside balcony must be scheduled ahead of time. Everyone climbing the tower is required to sign waivers. Parents are required to sign for those under the age of 16. Climbers must be at least 9 years old.

Our weekly seasonal tours are only to the 2nd level of the tower, NOT to the observation balcony at the top!
Children MUST be 7 years or older to enter the lighthouse due to government safety regulations.
No more than 15 visitors will be allowed inside the tower at any time.
Visitors are requested not to wear flip-flops, high heels, open-toed or hard leather heels/soles. Sneakers are the preferred shoes.
Climbers are required to have both hands free for climbing due to the steepness of our steps.  No exceptions will be made!
Weather permitting (we can not allow visitors in the lighthouse if there is lightning in the area)
There are no Restroom facilities on site

"Nothing can compare to NC Light Houses"

Called me biased but nothing compares to the sight of North Carolina light houses. Whenever you visit one of these magical structures it is like being transported back in time when things were much more simple. They are beautiful and this one is no exception. We are planning a trip for our next summer vacation to visit all of the light houses in one trip.

"Oak Island Lighthouse - not for young kids"

On our first trip to Oak Island, my three year old daughter was super excited to visit the Oak Island Lighthouse.  From the car I realized it is one of the least attractive lighthouses I've seen.  We parked and walked up.  The volunteer promptly told us children under nine were not allowed inside because of lead paint concerns.  What a disappointment!
