"Mellow beach destination"

We have vacationed at Oak Island 3 times with our young children.  The kids love Oak Island, but they would probably be happy anywhere with sand and waves!  The pros are that Oak Island is relatively quiet and non-commercial.  It isn't terribly expensive either.  We have stayed in beach front homes by Better Beach Rentals each time, and they have been fine - acceptable but nothing spectacular.  That said, on our last visit, our view of the beach was obscured by a giant (5 foot tall) rusty pipe running down the shore.  I think it had something to do with beach restoration, but it really interfered with our beach enjoyment.   If you plan to go to Oak Island, definitely ask if there will be a rusty pipe running the length of the beach!

"Fun!"

Quiet and fun!  We go often to visit friends and we try to visit every time.  Nice and clean!  We have never been there when its crowded so I don't know how bad it really gets but its been just about empty when we visit!  Will visit as often as we can!

"Oak Island"

Friends of the family own a beach house here.  We have stayed several times.  Loved it!!  Myrtle Beach is only 45 min away!  Perfect distance for day trip to see all the attractions that MB has to offer.  There is also a golf course on the island.  I love the not crowded beaches.  Perfect for families with small children or older couple who don't like a bunch of noisy stuff.

"Best Beach"

We love coming to Oak Island Beach.  It is one of the most relaxing and quite beaches in the area.  It is never crowded.  It is near the town of Southport, which a quaint town with many old shops.  You can also take the Ferry over to Fort Fisher, which is neat.
This is by far on the best beaches I have been to.  Great family time.

"Beach Fun"

We love to visit Oak Island for long relaxing vacations.  The beach is rarely crowded and the water is always warm.  You can take a short ferry ride to the Aquarium @ Fort Fisher.  Wilmington and Myrtle Beach are an hour away for a daytrip. We love to venture into Southport and visit the local shops.

If you are looking for a nice, quiet, relaxing vacation, I highly recommend Oak Island, NC.
