"The mission of the North Museum of Natural History & Science
is to promote lifelong learning by generating excitement and curiosity
in the natural and physical sciences and technology."
As a mother of two young sons, I'm always looking for fun ways for my boys to learn. North Museum
was a great experience for us. We explored the entire museum, and found such a variety. There was
a traveling exhibit with detailed insect sculptures that were amazing! The planetarium show was
wonderful. Mr Kevin Witman gave it a personal experience. We learned about the changes in
technology and that North has not only the 3rd largest planetarium dome in Pennsylvania, but
also one of the few plaster domes left. There is a room full of rock, bird, and insect collections,
a room for reptiles and bugs, and another for kids to learn and play in with puzzles, books, and
various hands on "exhibits". There's a "vending cafe", which is a small room to the side where you
can buy a soda, or sit and relax. They encourage that you keep food and drink in this room to protect
the exhibits. Bathrooms are on the bottom and top floors, though there are no baby changing stations,
there is a place to sit and wait in the ladies' rooms. The gift shop in the front where you pay admission,
and the shop is priced very reasonably.
There is street parking, and no parking meters, so free parking. North reciprocates with ASTC memberships, excepting
the Whitiker Center or Lancaster Science Factory since they're both within 90 miles. North is open weekends and through
the week. They're closed Mondays, with exceptions for holidays. I consider the admission prices reasonable. My boys
really loved the computerized globe, where they could make eyes blink, show landscapes, maps, and so much more. We
also really enjoyed the kids' room with all the puzzles, the microscope, and and using the binoculars. We had a wonderful
time, and we hope to visit again soon.
Disclosure: Our family received complimentary admission to help facilitate this review. I was not asked to express a particular
point of view and opinions are my own based on my experience.
The North Museum, on the campus of Franklin and Marshall College, offers collections of Native American artifacts, birds, fossils, minerals, and a planetarium. Children especially enjoy the Discovery Room’s hands-on science and nature exhibits and the herpetarium with more than forty live reptiles.
