Extended hours during school vacation periods; closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The studio building is open from May through October.
It's a beautiful drive going to the Norman Rockwell museum, but the kids just don't enjoy looking at the paintings. It didn't help that they were walking the pattern of the floor which kept setting off the alarms. We had to be asked to keep the kids in the center of the room. But those darn tiles kept drawing the kids attention and needed to be walked on. We have gone in the winter and the spring and I'd recommend going anytime, except winter! The view on the grounds is beautiful, but hard to trudge through in the winter. We were able to get passes from our local library so we got in for free. Old kids would probably enjoy this much more than younger kids.
Rockwell, chronicler of life in America for seven decades, lived in Stockbridge for the last twenty-five years of his life. The Norman Rockwell Museum holds the largest collection of original Rockwells, including Saturday Evening Post favorites depicting American values and strength of character. Changing exhibits feature works of other illustrators. The museum has special family days, programs, and art activities. The grounds are a pleasant spot for a walk or a picnic. Outdoor sculptures are by Rockwell’s son Peter.
We loved this place, but we were there without children. The outdoor sculptures would be great to see with kids, but the museum is better for older kids who can appreciate the art or who can keep their hands off.
