"One of the best for XC skiing in CO"

While the Fraser Valley of CO, just outside of Winter Park holds quite a few options for outdoor winter adventures, one of the two best XC skiing and snowshoeing venues (especially for families) is to be found at Snow Mountain Ranch/YMCA of the Rockies.  While they do not have all the bells and whistles you'd find at nearby Devil's Thumb Ranch, they are equally family friendly and quite a bit less pricey.  The nordic center rents ski gear (both skate and classic) from young kids up to adult sizes, as well as snowshoe gear and pulk sleds for pulling little ones.  They can provide lessons and on weekends have free kids' ski clinics just outside their lodge.  Upstairs, around lunchtime, you'll find some tasty food to warm you up in their small and informal cafeteria setting.  Also, it's helpful to know that coffee, tea and cocoa are always complimentary!  With over 100km of groomed ski trails, there are plenty of options for skiers of all levels, including a nice 2km dog-friendly loop near the lodge to get your dog some exercise or practice skijoring.  We also just learned that they started to provide a 2 hour Child Watch for $10 at the nearby Day Camp building on weekends, if you wanted to head out on an adult ski or hike for a bit.

"5,000 acres of fun in the snow"

You can go tubing, sledding, ice skating, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and take a sleigh ride, and when you get cold you can warm up inside--there's a climbing wall, roller skating, a swimming pool, a craft center, and more. You can stay in a lodge room and eat at the communal dining room, or stay in a cabin and take advantage of your own kitchen. This winter the snow activities are free and you can rent your equipment right there. The cabins are pet friendly. It's the perfect winter get-away, with downhill skiing at Winter Park only half-an-hour away.
