We stopped by Ninety Six on impulse one Saturday afternoon. What a pleasant surprise! This National Historic Site is small but makes for a nice half-day trip. The visitors center has a short video (on a small TV) that explains the history of the site. There is a very small exhibit of artifacts found on site. They do offer a Junior Ranger program, though we did not have time to do it (we plan to go back and complete it soon). A self-guided tour takes you to the battle sites and the sites of the old towns of Cambridge and Ninety Six. Some of these areas are being restored but it is not a distraction and does not inhibit your visit. Guide markers show you the old Cherokee and Charleston Roads, and encourage the visitor to walk down the old paths. This is one of the few parks we have visited that allow the visitor to walk off the "path". They only ask that you respect the land, and if you find an artifact, you return it to the park ranger. This is a lovely location to take a picnic lunch. You can do a bit of birdwatching here as well.
