If your family would rather not swim in salt water, Nickerson State Forest, Cape Cod’s largest park, is a great place for you—it has several large freshwater kettle ponds with a small beach at one of the ponds.
The park also features hiking trails, ponds stocked with trout, bike trails that connect to the Cape Cod Rail Trail, boating, summertime interpretive programs, and camping. (Call Reserve America at 877-422-6762; www.reserveamerica.com).
Jack’s Boat Rental (508-349-9808 or 508-896-8556) is located at both Flax’s and Cliff Ponds in Nickerson State Forest. Skating and crosscountry skiing (conditions permitting) are popular in the winter.
