This past Christmas our family packed into the car and headed to the Celebration in Lights at Newport News Park. I was kind of iffy about spending the money without the knowledge of what it all entailed, but it was great, and my two year old daughter really loved it! Turn up your Christmas music as you ride through this wonderful display, including animated lights and themes.
If the weather’s wonderful, pack a picnic lunch and head for Newport News Park. At more than 8,000 acres, it’s one of the country’s largest municipal parks. After lunch hike the trails, take a paddleboat for a spin, bike ride, golf, canoe, or fish. There are 188 campsites available; call (800) 203-8322.
The White Oak Trail is a nice stroll. Along its 2.6 miles you’ll find bayberry shrubs, white oak trees, and Sycamore Creek (a good place to look for frogs and tadpoles). There’s also a 5.3-mile designated bikeway (bikes are available for rent) that takes you from the park’s campsite areas to George Washington’s headquarters at Yorktown Battlefield. (Helmets are required for those ages 14 and under.)
Stop by the Newport News Park Discovery Center, 13560 Jefferson Avenue (757-886-7916), which serves as a temporary shelter for animals being rehabilitated. More than 400 orphaned and injured animals are cared for each year at this facility. Exhibits feature wildlife found in the park and Civil War artifacts. Ask about the Friday evening nature programs in the summer, such as Bats, Bats, Bats and Oh, Deer. Or play a round on the eighteen-hole disc golf course located near the entrance to the park.
