On our visit, there wasn't much beach left right around the pier. You have to go north or south to find more sand. Just as everyone else reported, there's the typical restaurants and ice cream places. We like the Old Spaghetti Factory across the street and also the Crab Cooker Restaurant.
It would be fun to rent bikes at this pier and ride along the beach to the Balboa Pier and Fun Zone. "McFam" has the best advice for parking and keeping an eye on the kids.
I LOVE going to Newport beach, CA. It is so beautiful and the beach is beautiful.
There are so many seashells on the beaches and everyone there is so wonderful and friendly. There were whales and dolphins and beautiful scenery everywhere you looked. They have many shopping, and eating decisions on the beach as well.
definetly not the cleanest of the So Cal beaches, Newport is a close alternative for us IEers. They have a pretty great sidewalk than runs along the length of the beach , perfect to get your family on beach cruisers for much needed exercise! There are the usual ice cream and beach junk food spots that are sure to please the little ones. The pier is ok for a pier, but to be honest, Huntington Beach is better.
One of my favorite LA area beaches, lots to do and kept pretty clean. They have good food stands and shops along the beach. You can rent bikes if visiting and ride all up and down the beach. They have volleyball nets and tons of things you can do there. Kid friendly.
This is the best beach that I've been to in the Los Angeles area. I've been to Venice, Santa Monica, Ventura, Redondo, Huntington, and Malibu. The water was clean and the waves broke pretty far from the shore so my 3 yr old could play in the water without worrying about getting knocked down. The only drawback was the parking lot. No problems if you get there early, but hard to find after 9-10am. And it's even worse getting out if you're leaving around noon.
This is a classic Southern California Beach. Wide sand, great waves for surfing, boogie boarding or body boarding, a pier with a restaurant, and great sun.
When we visit this beach, we try to come before 10 on a weekend or 11 on a weekday and park in the metered area just north of the pier. (Off 21 st.) Then we can just hop over the boardwalk and we have the sand and water straight ahead. Bathrooms are on the pier.
The waves near the pier are generally flat and are great for small children to enjoy. But I've noticed that when the tide goes out, my children follow it and they can end up far away from our blanket. Gotta keep my eye on them!
The sand is very fine here and hard to get out of blankets and clothes. We keep a bottle of baby powder in our car which is amazing for getting sticky sand off of skin.
