For nearly two centuries this museum has been the archival heart of New York, housing an interesting and eclectic collection of art and artifacts of the Empire State. Among the treasures are an original copy of the Declaration of Independence, 431 original watercolors of American birds by John James Audubon, and more than a hundred Louis Comfort Tiffany stained-glass lamps. Downstairs is Kid City, an exhibit where children can learn what life was like on the Upper West Side more than a hundred years ago.
