This aquarium has definitely become one of my family's favorite places to visit every so often. We love seeing all of the different types of animals like the Sea lions & otters, Penguins, Sharks & even Jellyfish! (there's many more!) There's a cute cafe to eat at that is delicious...our favorite part is where you can stand inside & see the waves crash over you - that's when the crabs come out!

My kids and I absolutely love the New York Aquarium. It completely blows the Jenkinson's Aquarium away, which used to be their favorite. The shark and turtle exhibits are absolutely amazing and before you know it, you could end up spending several hours just looking at all the exhibits and enjoying yourself. I'd definitely give it a go if I were you.
This is a very nice aquarium, but it hasn't changed much in the last 15 years. There are plenty of different exhibits, my kids love the sharks and dolphins. We do not get to see the penguins much even though the kids love them because my older son is very sensitive to smell (sensory disorder). The shows here are great though, and the interactive area where they can handle the starfish and such is wonderful (I do wish this area was larger, it gets crowded in there very fast). Overall a nice aquarium, but could use a few improvements. Of course, being right next to Coney Island is a huge bonus!
We recently went back to the aquarium for the first time with our daughter and had a blast. Several of the exhibits were closed due to construction, but the walrus, as always, was a huge favorite for us! It was very cool to see the sharks they had on site, as well. And the proximity to Coney Island is fantastic!
Birthplace of baby beluga whales, this is one of the best aquariums in the Northeast.Sea and shore creatures here include bottle-nosed dolphins, tiger sharks, huge sea turtles, schools of candy-colored fish, electric eels, and graceful anemones.
Alien Stingers explores the mysterious sea jellies. Discovery Cove has starfish and crab touch tanks and interactive exhibits; the Sea Cliffs are home to an assortment of penguins, walruses, and otters; and seasonal sea lion and dolphin shows are scheduled at the Aquatheater.
Family programs are offered year-round, ranging from seashore crafts to shark and whale talks.
After having been spoiled by the Monterey bay aquarium in CA, this didn't seem like much but it was still worth a visit! They have a really cool seal show which would be enjoyed by children and adults of all ages and the jelly fish and sea life exhibits are quite cool! while there definitely check out the boardwalk and coney island amusement park next door!
Don't get me wrong from the title. When we first started going, my son really enjoyed it. We have friends with whom we have almost monthly playdates here. But the last time we went, my son said "Again?!" I have to admit, for NYC's only aquarium, in famous Coney Island, it's not as world class as it should be. It needs a lot of work. Maybe they need money, I don't know. But I think they could jazz it up a bit. The exhibits are good, but I'm not sure how much my 3 year old gets out of it other than the wow factor. The walruses are pretty cool. As are the sharks. There is a small, crowded area where kids can pet starfish and horseshoe crabs. Anyway - we'll keep coming - it's a great indoor option with parking - for the winter. In the good weather, they do have the cool outdoor shows with seals and the like. But they could amp it up and do so much more for this new generation of visitors who are used to lots of excitement - unlike my generation who didn't have cable or video games on tv until the 1980s.
