I loved the time we spent at the new river gorge bridge. But it is a long walk down a whole lot of steps so be prepared and have your walking shoes on. The views are breath taking and you cant go wrong by spending a day at the new river gorge bridge. Once your done on your stair stepping trek down to the different look out points, take the time to jump in your car and explore the back roads winding down to the bottom of the gorge where you will find areas to pull over and enjoy more of what this area has to offer.
I am not a fan of heights, and I dislike bridges with a special kind of fear and loathing, so it was with extreme prejudice and quite a bit of coercion that I ventured out to the New River Bridge. My husband, however, really wanted to see it, as he spends quite a lot of time watching documentaries like “Build it Bigger” and “Extreme Engineering”. After driving across the bridge, I saw a sign for the Visitor’s Center and he got so excited we just had to go. After parking in the lot, we followed the signs to the outlook, which was at the bottom of a very long flight of stairs, wondering all the way if the view was actually worth it. It was. The view is completely breathtaking. To the left, and way, way down is the New River, winding through the beautiful green and brown landscape. To the right and way up is the towering steel structure of the New River Bridge, spanning the gigantic gorge below. While I was a bit uncomfortable by the height, I forgot all of that as I took in the beauty around me. If we had had more time, we would have taken advantage of the trails around the visitor’s center, but just seeing that view was worth the stop.
